These plain glass funnels are school grade, with a long stem, and are made for gravity filtration. The long stem reaches deep into receiving vessels like conical flasks to stop splashing and improve flow. They're made from borosilicate 3.3 glass, with high thermal shock resistance and chemical durability.

Choosing the right filter paper size stops liquid bypassing the paper or overflowing the funnel. For a standard 60° glass funnel, use filter paper roughly 1.5 to 2 times the diameter of the funnel rim.

When folded into a cone, the paper should ideally sit 5 to 10mm below the rim, or stick up just slightly above it for easy removal.

Tips for Better Filtration

  • Wet the paper: Always wet the paper with a little of your solvent (such as distilled water) before pouring. This seats the paper against the glass, removes air gaps and speeds up the flow.
  • Flute the paper: For faster filtration, fold the paper concertina-style. This increases the surface area and lets air escape, which avoids the seal that slows standard gravity filtration.
