Choosing the correct filter paper size is essential to ensure the liquid doesn't bypass the paper or overflow the funnel. For a standard 60° glass funnel, the general rule is to use a filter paper diameter that is roughly 1.5 to 2 times the diameter of the funnel rim.

When folded into a cone, the paper should ideally sit 5–10 mm below the rim or extend just slightly above it for easy removal.

Pro-Tips for Better Filtration

• Wetting the Paper: Always wet the paper with a small amount of your solvent (e.g., distilled water) before pouring your mixture. This "seats" the paper against the glass to prevent air gaps and speed up flow.
• Fluting: If you need faster filtration, try fluting (folding the paper into a concertina shape). This increases the surface area and allows air to escape, preventing the "seal" that slows down standard gravity filtration.
