This gas jar comes with a glass cover and is a cylindrical glass vessel for collecting, storing and observing gases. It's designed for gas collection by displacement of water or air.

  • Material: Quality soda-lime glass, clear and chemically resistant.

    • Ground flange: The top rim is finely ground for a gas-tight seal with the matching cover plate.
    • Heavy base: A wide, weighted base helps stop it tipping over during experiments.

Safety and Handling

  • Gas density: If the gas is denser than air (like CO2), store the jar upright with the cover on top. If it's lighter than air (like H2), store the jar upside down so the gas can't escape past the cover.
  • Not for heating: Soda-lime gas jars shouldn't be heated directly over a flame or on a hot plate, as they may crack.

Main Uses in School Experiments

  • Collecting gas by displacement: Used with a beehive shelf in a water trough. As gas is produced, it bubbles into the upside-down, water-filled jar and pushes the water out until the jar is full.
  • Testing gases: Once the gas is collected, the glass cover stops it escaping. Students then do the standard gas tests:
    • Oxygen: A glowing splint relights.
    • Hydrogen: A lit splint gives a "squeaky pop".
    • Carbon dioxide: Limewater added to the jar and shaken turns milky.
