This dicot flower model is enlarged approximately 8X, so students can easily study the floral components and the reproductive functions of flowers. It can be disassembled to reveal the pollen grains inside and study the process of pollination. Important structures are numbered on the model and correspond to an accompanying key card.

A vertical section (V.S.) is a cut that runs perpendicular to the surface of the specimen and reveals its internal structure from top to bottom.

Parts of the flower

  • Stem (peduncle): the stalk that supports the flower
  • Sepals: the outermost, leaf-like structures that protect the developing bud. They are collectively called the calyx.
  • Petals: brightly coloured structures inside the sepals that attract pollinators. They are collectively called the corolla.
  • Pollen grains: inside the protective walls, pollen grains contain highly specialized cellular machinery dedicated to reproduction
  • Stamen: the male reproductive part. It consists of the anther, which produces pollen, and the filament, the stalk that supports the anther.
  • Pistil: the female reproductive part. It consists of the stigma (the sticky tip where pollen lands), the style (the stalk connecting the stigma to the ovary) and the ovary (the enlarged base of the pistil, containing the ovules).

These parts work together in the process of pollination and fertilization, which leads to seed development.
