A Soxhlet Extraction Apparatus with a Coil Condenser (Graham or Allihn type) is the standard setup for the continuous extraction of lipids or bioactive compounds from solid materials using a volatile solvent.
- Boiling Flask: A flat or round-bottom flask (typically 250mL to 500mL) where the solvent is heated.
- Soxhlet Extractor Body: The middle section containing the thimble (where your solid sample sits) and the siphon tube that automatically drains the solvent back into the flask.
- Coil Condenser: Mounted on top to cool solvent vapors. The internal glass coil provides a larger surface area for more efficient cooling compared to a basic Liebig condenser.
- Joints: Usually standard 24/29 or 24/40 ground glass joints for a vacuum-tight seal.
- Vaporization: Solvent in the bottom flask is heated; vapors rise through the extractor's bypass side-arm.
- Condensation: Vapors hit the coil condenser, turn back into liquid, and drip onto the solid sample in the thimble.
- Soaking: The chamber fills with warm solvent, dissolving the desired compounds from the solid material.
- Siphoning: Once the liquid reaches the top of the siphon tube, it automatically drains back into the boiling flask, carrying the extract with it.
- Cycling: This process repeats automatically, concentrating the extract in the boiling flask while fresh solvent continues to cycle.
- Glass Type: High-quality Borosilicate 3.3 for high thermal resistance and chemical durability.
- Thimbles: Uses disposable cellulose or glass fiber thimbles (e.g., 33x80mm or 33x94mm for a 250mL extractor).
- Efficiency: The coil condenser is particularly effective for low-boiling-point solvents like hexane, petroleum ether, or ethanol.
