A spiral condenser (Graham condenser) is used to cool and condense a gas back into a liquid, often as part of chemical distillation. It consists of a coiled glass tube through which the gas travels, surrounded by a water jacket that cools the gas. The main advantages of a spiral heat exchanger are its high overall heat transfer coefficient and compact size for a given heat exchange area.

It's recommended for low-viscosity distillation processes such as alcohol, with the best results when assembled in a vertical orientation.

Design: features a central spiral glass coil inside an outer jacket. The large surface area of the coil optimises heat exchange.

Joints: precision-ground interchangeable ground glass joints ensure a vacuum-tight fit.

Usage best practices: always connect the water inlet to the lower glass connector and the outlet to the upper connector, so the jacket stays completely filled with coolant for maximum efficiency. For low-viscosity processes like alcohol distillation, use the condenser in a vertical orientation. These are autoclavable, but make sure all tubing is removed and joints aren't seized before sterilising.
