This vertical pear shape splash head (also known as a recovery bend with a splash head) is an essential component in laboratory distillation assemblies.

Its main purpose is to act as a buffer between a boiling flask and a condenser. The bulbous pear shape reduces the velocity of rising vapours, letting any accidentally splashed liquid droplets fall back into the boiling flask rather than contaminating the distillate. It's specifically designed for setups where the condenser is oriented vertically, often using spiral condensers. Beyond simple distillation, the shape is also used for gas washing, absorption and liquid distribution, since the internal volume promotes better mixing and contact between gases and liquids, and the large internal surface area of the pear bulb can promote natural reflux, where vapours condense early and return to the flask for a higher purity final product.

It's manufactured from high-quality 3.3 borosilicate glass, offering strong chemical resistance and the ability to withstand high temperatures and thermal shocks. The vertical pear shape encourages efficient mixing and separation of vapours, typically with two male ground glass cones in standard taper sizes such as 19/26, 24/29 or 29/32. A vertical tube extends into the pear-shaped bulb to direct vapour flow while trapping accidental liquid splashes.
