Is this a true zoom microscope?

Yes. The lens runs smoothly from 0.8x to 5x, so you can follow a detail in and out instead of jumping between fixed steps. Click stops at 1x, 2x, 3x and 4x help you return to a known magnification.

How much room is there under the lens?

115 mm as standard, and 45 to 211 mm with an auxiliary objective. That's enough for a soldering iron, a specimen tray or a small assembly jig.

What is the glass stage plate for?

It lets light from the base shine up through the specimen. Swap to the top light for solid objects.

What magnification does it reach?

8x to 50x, using the WF10x/22 mm eyepieces with the 0.8-5x zoom.
