These soda-lime glass test tubes have no rim and are affordable, general-purpose tubes for routine work that doesn't involve extreme temperature changes. The rimless (straight-cut) design is easy to handle, clean, plug and store in busy labs.

The most common test tube size in school science labs is 16 x 150mm. For vigorous boiling or bacteriology, 25 x 150mm or 25 x 200mm tubes (often called boiling tubes) are used, as their wide mouths stop solutions boiling over when heated in a Bunsen flame.

Key Features

  • Material: Soda-lime glass (also called soda-lime-silica or "soft" glass), made mainly of silica, soda and lime.
  • Clarity: Clear glass that lets students and technicians see subtle colour changes, precipitates and layers.
  • Heat: Moderate heat resistance. Fine for gentle warming (for example in a water bath), but not recommended for direct flame because of its high thermal expansion.
  • Chemical resistance: Fine for neutral and mildly acidic or alkaline solutions, but less resistant to aggressive chemicals than borosilicate glass.
  • Design: A round bottom and a smooth, rimless edge.
  • Even walls: Made with even wall thickness and no thin spots, for strength during centrifuging or vortexing.

Soda-Lime vs Borosilicate

  • Durability: Soda-lime scratches more easily, but often handles knocks better than more brittle borosilicate.
  • Thermal shock: Borosilicate can go from very cold to very hot without breaking. Soda-lime can crack with fast temperature changes.
