Economy Soda-lime glass test tubes without a rim are cost-effective, general-purpose laboratory vessels designed for routine tasks that do not involve extreme thermal stress. The rimless (straight-cut) design is preferred for smooth handling, easy cleaning, and more efficient plugging or storage in high-throughput environments.

The most commonly used test tube size in standard science labs and classrooms is 16mm x 150mm. Heavy Boiling/Bacteriology: 25mm x 150mm or 25mm x 200mm (often called "boiling tubes"). These wide-mouth profiles are used when solutions need to be vigorously boiled over a Bunsen burner without bubbling over.

The cost-effective, everyday standard for routine laboratory testing and STEM classrooms.

Key Features
  • Material: Soda-lime glass (also known as soda-lime-silica or "soft" glass), composed primarily of silica, soda, and lime.
  • High-Clarity Soda-Lime Glass: Engineered with maximum optical transmission, allowing students and lab technicians to clearly observe subtle color changes, precipitates, and phase shifts.
  • Thermal Properties: Moderate heat resistance; suitable for gentle warming (e.g., in a water bath) but not recommended for direct exposure to open flames due to a high coefficient of thermal expansion.
  • Chemical Resistance: Adequate for neutral and mild acidic/alkaline solutions, but more susceptible to corrosion from aggressive chemicals compared to borosilicate glass.
  • Design: Features a round bottom and a smooth, rimless edge (no beaded rim).
  • Uniform Wall Thickness: Manufactured with precise mechanical control to eliminate thin spots, providing optimal structural durability during centrifugal force or rigorous automated vortexing.
  • Highly Economical Solution: Offered at a fraction of the cost of premium borosilicate glass, making them the perfect budget-friendly solution for high-volume disposable use or large-scale student classroom packs.
  • Rounded U-Shaped Bottoms: Formed with a smooth, structurally reinforced spherical base to minimize sample retention and ensure rapid, effortless cleanup.
Dimensions (Diameter x Length)  Approx. Capacity Common Use Case
10 x 75 mm 3–4 mL Small sample storage
12 x 75 mm 5 mL Routine clinical testing
13 x 100 mm 7–10 mL Standard medical laboratory size
16 x 100 mm 12–15 mL General mixing and chemical analysis
16 x 150 mm 18–20 mL Larger volume sample processing
25 x 150 mm 50–55 mL Chemical reactions and larger storage

Note: Dimensions indicate the Outer Diameter (OD) followed by the Total Length of the tube in millimeters. Exact capacities can vary slightly depending on the wall thickness (typically 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm for soda glass) and whether it features a round or flat bottom shape.

Applications
  • Educational Settings: Ideal for school and university labs due to their low cost and suitability for non-critical experiments.
  • Microbiology: Small rimless tubes (e.g., 50 x 6 mm) are often used as Durham tubes to detect gas production in culture media.
  • High-Throughput Labs: Used for routine sample collection, temporary storage, and simple mixing where glass is required but expensive borosilicate is not necessary.
  • Industrial QC: Applied in quality control testing for non-corrosive liquids.
Comparison: Soda-Lime vs. Borosilicate
While soda-lime glass is more affordable and easier to manufacture, it lacks the advanced durability of 3.3 Borosilicate glass.
  • Durability: Soda-lime is less scratch-resistant but often has better impact resistance than the more brittle borosilicate.
  • Thermal Shock: Borosilicate can transition from extreme cold to high heat without breaking; soda-lime is prone to cracking under rapid temperature changes.
