This Vigreux distillation column (often called a "thorn" or "Hammer-Stab" tube) is fractional distillation glassware with many indentations (thorns) inside that greatly increase the surface area for vapour-liquid contact.

  • More theoretical plates: The thorns allow repeated evaporation and condensation within one column, giving much sharper separation than a plain tube.
  • Low hold-up: Unlike packed columns (filled with beads), a Vigreux column holds back very little liquid, so it's ideal for small quantities.
  • Airtight connections: Precision ground joints fit other components like distilling heads and condensers.
