Typical Flower V.S.

This model is an enlarged view of a typical flower, with cut-away sections to show the major parts: stem, sepal, petal, stamen and pistil. Students can trace the transmission of the male gamete to the female gamete within the ovary. It is mounted on a base and numbered, with an English key card, and the details are hand-painted with eco-friendly paint.

A vertical section (V.S.) is a cut that runs perpendicular to the surface of the specimen and reveals its internal structure from top to bottom.

Parts of the flower

• Stem (peduncle): the stalk that supports the flower
• Sepals: the outermost, leaf-like structures that protect the developing bud. They are collectively called the calyx.
• Petals: brightly coloured structures inside the sepals that attract pollinators. They are collectively called the corolla.
• Stamen: the male reproductive part. It consists of the anther, which produces pollen, and the filament, the stalk that supports the anther.
• Pistil: the female reproductive part. It consists of the stigma (the sticky tip where pollen lands), the style (the stalk connecting the stigma to the ovary) and the ovary (the enlarged base of the pistil, containing the ovules).

These parts work together in the process of pollination and fertilization, which leads to seed development.
