What It Does

  • Gas drying: Removes moisture from generated gases (like oxygen or hydrogen) by passing them through a solid desiccant.
  • Reaction protection: Fitted at the outlet of a reaction setup, it stops moist air getting into the vessel while still letting the pressure equalise.
  • Desiccants: Usually filled with anhydrous calcium chloride, silica gel or potassium hydroxide.

Setting It Up

  1. Plug the arms: Put a small plug of glass wool or cotton at the base of each arm so desiccant particles can't escape or block the gas flow.
  2. Fill: Add the desiccant into the U-bend, packed loosely enough to let gas move freely.
  3. Connect: Attach rubber or silicone tubing to the side arms, using hose clamps if needed for an airtight seal.
  4. Monitor: The clear glass lets you see when the desiccant is used up (for example, silica gel changing from blue to pink).
