Watch glasses are highly functional laboratory glassware that have a variety of uses in the classroom or lab.

The concave dishes work well as lids for flasks and beakers, or for holding small samples for observation under a low-power microscope. Also useful for evaporating liquids off of samples (i.e. growing seed crystals). They can be used for making lenses of ice or other liquids.

When selecting a watch glass to use as a beaker cover, the universal rule of thumb is that the watch glass diameter must be roughly 10 mm to 25 mm larger than the outer diameter of the beaker rim. This ensures it sits securely on the top edge, safely covers the pouring spout, and will not accidentally slide inside the beaker.

Neutral glass is a high-purity type of borosilicate glass formulated with significant amounts of boric oxide, aluminium oxide, and alkali or alkaline earth oxides. The term "neutral" refers specifically to its high hydrolytic and chemical inertness, meaning it does not react with the substances it touches and will not leach alkali ions into chemical solutions, thereby keeping the pH level neutral.

(Note: While neutral glass is highly durable, it can still be degraded by hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, and strong hot caustic alkaline solutions.)

Because watch glasses are general-purpose laboratory surfaces, they must withstand diverse thermal and chemical environments. Neutral glass provides the exact properties required for these applications.
