This plain white ceramic tile measures 150mm x 150mm (15 x 15cm) and has a glazed surface, which makes it a handy spotting tile for school science.
In school chemistry and science experiments, a plain white tile has two main jobs:
1. Spotting or Drop-Reaction Testing (Microscale Titration)
For reactions that use small quantities, students use the glazed surface as a reaction plate.
- Instead of running a full, large-volume titration in a beaker, students place separate drops of an analyte on the tile.
- They then add indicator drops or test solutions (for example with a glass rod or dropper) directly onto the surface, so they can watch several separate reactions side by side.
2. High-Contrast Indicator Visibility (Macro Titration)
In a standard burette-and-flask titration, the tile goes directly under the conical flask.
- Removes background interference: School lab benches are often dark navy, black or grey, and a dark background makes subtle colour changes in a liquid hard to see.
- Helps you hit the endpoint: The flat, bright white surface gives a clean, high-contrast background. Students can spot the exact moment a single drop causes a permanent faint colour change (such as phenolphthalein turning from clear to a lasting light pink), which stops them overshooting the endpoint.
