An Erlenmeyer flask, also known as a conical flask or a titration flask, is a type of laboratory flask which features a flat bottom, a conical body, and a cylindrical neck.

Erlenmeyer flasks have wide bases, with sides that taper upward to a short vertical neck. They may be graduated, and often spots of ground glass or enamel are used where they can be labelled with a pencil.

The mouth of the Erlenmeyer flask may have a beaded lip that can be stopped or covered. Alternatively, the neck may be fitted with ground glass or other connector for use with more specialized stoppers or attachment to other apparatus.

Key Features
  • Conical Shape: Provides a large base for stability and efficient heating.
  • Narrow Neck: Reduces evaporation and allows for easy sealing with rubber stoppers or cotton wool.
  • Material: Generally manufactured from Borosilicate 3.3 glass to handle high temperatures and chemical reactions.
  • Graduations: Most models feature permanent white enamel scales for approximate volume measurement.
  • Stability: The broad, flat base provides a low centre of gravity, making the flask much harder to tip over than a round-bottom flask or a tall graduated cylinder.
  • Splatter Prevention: The tapered walls act as a built-in shield, directing any splashing liquid back down toward the base.
  • Compatibility: The narrow neck is specifically sized to support filter funnels and fit standard laboratory clamps.
