What is a laboratory condenser?

A laboratory condenser is a glass vessel designed to cool and liquefy vapours produced during distillation, reflux reactions, and other processes that generate steam or solvent vapour. The most common type — the Liebig condenser — consists of an inner glass tube surrounded by an outer water jacket; cooling water flows continuously through the jacket, removing heat from the vapour passing through the inner tube and condensing it back into liquid form.

Other types include the Graham (coil) condenser for efficient reflux, the Allihn (bulb) condenser for vigorous reflux reactions, the West condenser for compact setups, and the Dimroth condenser for high-efficiency cooling. Common uses of laboratory condensers in the lab

  • Simple distillation

    A Liebig condenser mounted at an angle converts vapour from a distillation flask into pure distillate. Used to purify solvents, separate mixtures by boiling point, and recover distilled water — the most common condenser application in educational and research labs.

  • Reflux chemistry

    Paired with a fractionating column, a condenser separates mixtures of liquids with similar boiling points — such as ethanol and water, or crude oil fractions. The column provides additional surface area for vapour-liquid equilibration before the purified vapour reaches the condenser.

  • Vacuum distillation

    When compounds decompose before reaching their normal boiling point, vacuum distillation reduces pressure to lower the boiling point to a manageable temperature. A vacuum-compatible condenser collects the distillate while the system remains under reduced pressure throughout the process.

  • Fractional distillation

    Paired with a fractionating column, a condenser separates mixtures of liquids with similar boiling points — such as ethanol and water, or crude oil fractions. The column provides additional surface area for vapour-liquid equilibration before the purified vapour reaches the condenser.
